Prophecy more than history

CategorIes:

In the typical Christian classification of the “books” of the Bible, some books are labelled as history. But there is something to be learned if we look to the TaNaK, also known as “Hebrew Bible” or the Old Testament. It turns out that books that the Christians classify as history are, in the Jewish perspective, called books of the prophets.

This is an important shift in perspective. Instead of seeing a set of chronological events in which we happen to find God at work and from which we draw out a theology, we instead should see a set of theologically constructed events which may happen in chronological order. Which is to say, that theology is our primary order, not chronology.

This shift of perspectives is also seen in the use of our civil calendar which orders events from January to December vs our church calendar which orders events from Advent to Ordinary Time. How do we mentally order the way we see events in the world. Do we see events simply happening in a chronological order or do we see events happening in a theological order?
