Surprising Books

CategorIes:

There are some books of the Bible that can cause us to ask, “Why is this book in the Bible?” Here are a few examples:

Neither the Song of Solomon nor Esther mention God.

Job and Ecclesiastes both question God, though from different perspectives; Job challenges God to explain why he is suffering. Ecclesiastes questions the meaning of life.

The Song of Solomon exalts sexuality with quite a bit of sexual imagery.

What does it mean for us, that these books are included in the Bible? The message for us is 1) it is OK to challenge God though we need to mind our attitudes 2) It is possible to talk about the work of God without explicitly referring to Him 3) It is OK to go through the process of questioning ourselves or God – and being open with Him as we do so, 4) God invented sex and it is healthy to enjoy it.
